Colossal waves rammed into our boat. It's imbalance throwing us closer to the fragile railings, that kept us from being eaten alive by the sea. The scorching sun poured through the cracks of the tarp above us. The engine roared and the heavy wind heaved around our cold ears. Water as dark as a moonless beach sizzled and foamed around us. The scene was horrifyingly beautiful.
Louis and I were collapsed on the hotel sofa watching the weather channel when our jaws dropped. The forecast predicted a whole week of sun. We immediately got up and started to come up with things we should do. We were only in England for five more days, and it had poured the entire time we were there. Not quite the vacation, if I can say so. We brainstormed for a while and Louis eventually came up with the idea of a boat trip. The problem was that ever since a very young age I’ve had a tremendous fear of boats. I realize that was a detail I should have probably mentioned to Louis before our trip to England, or the three years we’ve been friends for, but I’ve always been embarrassed by it.
Louis kept looking at boats as I nervously tapped my fingers. “This one doesn’t look bad. It’s called ‘The Princess’.” It became quite clear to me that Louis was really starting to commit to this boat trip. I had to stop it from happening. “Louis do we really want to be going on a boat called The Princess? I mean… What if it’s girly?”. My hands trembled, as I started to feel sicker and sicker in my stomach. It got the point where I couldn't handle it anymore and I had to excuse myself to take a quick breather and figure out my next move. After a few minutes of thinking I decided I was going to tell Louis, I was afraid of boats. I stepped out of the bathroom feeling even sicker in my stomach, but my courage carried me to the sofa where Louis was sitting. My hands and knees shook. I opened my mouth and before I could say a thing. “Hey, I got us seats on ‘The Victoria’. We’re going on a boat tomorrow!”
The car ride was awful. I still couldn't believe I got into the car, nor that I was on my way to get on a boat. I was clearly nervous, and Louis was starting to notice. He didn't seem to be in the mood to question my nervousness, however, so we continued driving in an uneasy and awkward silence, as I stared out the dusty window of our Volvo 740 Estate.
We walked towards the docks and were immediately greeted by our captain. I knew he was the captain due to his gold-plated captain's hat. The captain checked our tickets and eventually, the boat took off. The water under us splashed and gurgled. The wind started to slowly pick up, and the shore started to become more and more distant. Soon the only thing around us was the marble blue sea.
As we drove further out from shore more massive waves started to hit our boat. Until eventually, colossal waves rammed into our boat. It was at this moment that I was expecting to be hyperventilating, but I was doing the opposite. All my worries faded away. It was just me and the sea. It was a peace I've never felt before in my life. I felt free.

When I got back from the boat trip I was the happiest I've ever been in a while. I had unlocked a new chapter in my life that I was too scared to open. I let fear get the best of me, and I will never let that happen again. So to the people reading this. If you are afraid to do something. Just do it, and maybe you'll end up loving it. It's fear that keeps us from eventually doing the thing we may love. Don't back away from fear.
